The holidays bring plenty of joy, laughter, and a little healthy competition in BET+’s Queens of Christmas, a film that perfectly blends humor, community spirit, and heartfelt lessons. During our exclusive interview with the talented cast and director, we gained a deeper understanding of the dynamics behind this festive comedy—and the themes that resonate beyond the screen.
A Feud Rooted in Love
Vanessa Bell Calloway (Julia Mason) and Terri J. Vaughn (Doris Griffin) breathe life into two lifelong friends and neighbors whose playful yet fierce rivalry takes center stage. When asked about their on-screen chemistry, Calloway shared, “Julia and Doris have this deep history that’s so relatable—it’s not just about Christmas decorations. It’s about pride, family, and proving something to yourself. That’s what makes their story so real.” Vaughn echoed this sentiment, adding, “The humor comes naturally, but underneath it all, there’s so much love between these two women. You’ll laugh, but you’ll also see a lot of heart.”
Essence Atkins on Nancy: A Layered Queen
Essence Atkins’ character, Nancy, is the reigning “Queen of Christmas”—a woman whose seemingly over-the-top persona hides layers of insecurity. “Nancy is trying so hard to win this competition because she’s compensating for something deeper,” Atkins explained. “I wanted to play her as someone who’s not just funny, but vulnerable, because a lot of us put up facades during the holidays when we’re not feeling our best.”
Nancy’s journey highlights an important message: the pressure to appear perfect, even during a season meant for joy, can sometimes hold us back from true connection. Queens of Christmas gently reminds viewers to look past appearances and embrace authenticity.

Balancing Humor and Heart
Director Kenny Young, who guided this talented cast, shared his vision for blending comedy with emotional resonance. “The rivalry in the film could have easily overshadowed the story’s message,” Young said. “But at its core, this movie is about community, reconciliation, and celebrating what’s truly important. I encouraged the cast to lean into the humor but always keep the emotional truth front and center.”
Young’s approach pays off—the humor feels natural, and the film never loses sight of its heartwarming message of sisterhood and forgiveness.
A New Generation Steps In
The younger cast, including Hannah Whitley (Angela Mason) and Tyler Whitley (Vanessa Griffin), bring fresh energy and perspective to the story. Both Angela and Vanessa push their mothers to reevaluate the long-standing feud, representing a generational shift. “We wanted to show how the younger generation often challenges old traditions,” said Hannah Whitley. “It’s about breaking cycles and finding healthier ways to connect with family.”
Tyler Whitley added, “Vanessa sees how ridiculous the rivalry is, and she’s not afraid to call it out. It was fun to play that dynamic between a mother who’s stuck in her ways and a daughter who’s like, ‘Let it go!’”
A Message to Take Home
Queens of Christmas is more than just a lighthearted holiday comedy. It’s a story about family, forgiveness, and the traditions that bring us together—or pull us apart. Whether it’s Nancy’s facade, Doris and Julia’s rivalry, or the younger generation challenging outdated habits, the film delivers a universal message: true joy comes not from competition, but from connection.
As Essence Atkins beautifully put it, “Christmas isn’t about proving who’s the best. It’s about coming together, flaws and all, and finding joy in the moment.”
