Angie Stone, a pioneering figure in neo-soul and a member of the iconic hip-hop trio The Sequence, tragically passed away on March 1, 2025, at the age of 63. The acclaimed singer-songwriter was involved in a fatal car accident in Montgomery, Alabama, following a performance.
Born Angela Laverne Brown on December 18, 1961, in Columbia, South Carolina, Stone’s musical journey began in the late 1970s with The Sequence. The trio made history with their 1979 single “Funk You Up,” one of the earliest rap hits by a female group. Transitioning to a solo career in the late 1990s, Stone released her debut album, Black Diamond, in 1999, featuring the hit “No More Rain (In This Cloud).” Her 2001 album, Mahogany Soul, solidified her status in the neo-soul movement with tracks like “Wish I Didn’t Miss You.”

Stone’s contributions to music earned her three Grammy nominations and two Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards. Beyond her musical talents, she was also an actress, appearing in films such as The Fighting Temptations and TV shows like Moesha and Girlfriends.
Her sudden passing has left a deep void in the music community. Fans and fellow artists have taken to social media to express their grief and celebrate her lasting legacy. Her daughter, Ladi Diamond, confirmed the news, sharing her heartbreak with the world.

Angie Stone’s influence on R&B and hip-hop is undeniable. Her soulful voice and heartfelt lyrics touched the lives of many, and her impact on the music industry will continue to inspire generations to come.
