The courtroom drama surrounding hip-hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs took a sharp turn today as the federal jury announced it has reached a verdict on four out of five charges in his highly publicized sex trafficking and racketeering trial.
Only one charge — racketeering conspiracy — remains undecided.
What We Know So Far
In a note delivered to U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian, the jury explained that they were deadlocked on the first count, racketeering conspiracy, saying there are “jurors with unpersuadable opinions on both sides.”
The other charges involve sex trafficking allegations made by two of Diddy’s former partners — singer Cassie Ventura and another woman who testified under the alias “Jane”.
Inside the Jury Room
Now in their second day of deliberations, jurors have been intensely focused on witness testimony — especially Cassie Ventura’s harrowing accounts, which included disturbing incidents involving Diddy, luxury hotels, and high-profile international events.
Among the key testimony under review:
- An incident at the InterContinental Hotel in L.A., where Diddy was caught on camera allegedly assaulting Ventura in 2016.
- A “freak off” involving dancer Daniel Phillip, who testified about his repeated involvement in Combs’ sexual encounters.
- Testimony from Phillip about a disturbing encounter between Diddy and Ventura at New York’s Essex Hotel.
- A claim that Diddy threatened to release explicit footage during an event in Cannes.
The jury asked for detailed transcripts to revisit these testimonies — an indication that they’re deeply considering the evidence.
Behind the Courtroom Tension
While jurors deliberate, the courtroom remains charged. Just over an hour into discussions, a note was sent expressing concern over a juror allegedly not following instructions. Identified as a 51-year-old man sitting in seat three, the juror’s ability to participate raised eyebrows early on.
Judge Subramanian urged the group to continue deliberations in good faith, emphasizing the importance of open discussion and reconsideration if convinced of a mistake.
What’s Next?
The prosecution is pushing for the judge to issue an Allen charge — a standard instruction meant to encourage a deadlocked jury to reach consensus. The defense, however, feels it’s too soon and believes the jury should simply keep talking it out.
Former prosecutor Mark Chutkow, though not involved in the case, commented that the note suggests the jury may already be leaning toward conviction on the other charges. He also noted that racketeering, the most complex count, may be harder to agree on due to its broader legal implications.
What’s at Stake
If convicted on all charges — including the pending racketeering count — Diddy, 55, could face up to life in prison. The stakes couldn’t be higher for the Bad Boy Entertainment founder, who once sat atop the music and fashion worlds with unmatched influence.
