Can you tell our readers who is Christina Jones?
Thank you for having me! I’m a musician, actress, and aspiring voice-over artist.
What got you into music?
I’ve always been passionate about music, ever since I was a little girl. I would always dance around the house, hum to myself, sing along to every song I listened to– music has just always been a part of who I am.
Who inspired you?
I listened to a lot of old R&B and soul growing up (I have my dad to thank for that), so artists like Nat King Cole, Nancy Wilson, Ella Fitzgerald, Gladys Knight, or Aretha Franklin were always my go-to artists.
How would you describe your sound?
I would honestly describe it as malleable. I find that I like to sing in multiple genres and styles, no matter how different they might be–musical theater, pop, R&B, jazz, classical–I love it all. But I think that, in all those styles, my voice is warm and passionate.
What do you think makes you stand out from any other artist?
The way that I view music. I have chromesthesia, which is a type of synesthesia that correlates music with specific colors. Every time I hear a melody or a note, there’s a color attached to it.
What is your creative process like?
Because I have chromesthesia, I sometimes use it to influence the way that I sing. I try and match colors together and find new ones that compliment the overall hue that I see when I play or sing my music. It’s not something that I do consciously, it’s just what goes through my head every time I create: What flows the best together?
Who would you like to collaborate with?
I would LOVE to collaborate with Lizzo. Something about her vibe and her music matches my energy, passion, and style, and I think it would be a hell of a time to make music with her.
Have you ever dealt with performance anxiety?
Oh, absolutely. For me, though, the way that I would manage it was to just move. People would always find me dancing backstage right before I go on because I found that if I just stood there and thought about it, I would never be able to walk out and do what I need to do.
What are your favorite venues to perform in?
I LOVE the theater. I love being on a stage and looking out at the house and the people in the balcony. I love the lights and the pit and the excitement of being together with thousands of people in a big room.
What’s next for you?
I have an album that was released in late July! The album, You Were My Compass, is a collaboration that I did with Kimiko Ishizaka, who wrote all the songs. It’s a story about love lost and found again.
